7 Myths About Wrinkles Dispelled by a Doctor

Wrinkles. We all get them. And as a medically qualified aesthetics specialist I understand more than most how much we fear them!

Of course, some wrinkles and signs of ageing are simply a part of life. But we don’t have to accept premature ageing and there are things we can do to keep our skin looking younger.

But today I want to debunk some myths I often hear about wrinkles and visible signs of ageing. So let’s get started.

Myth 1: Wrinkles Only Appear Because You're Getting Older

While it's true that ageing and wrinkles are best pals, they are certainly not exclusive to each other. Young skin can start showcasing the early signs of fine lines due to a whole host of factors like sun exposure and exposure to pollution. So, next time you're squinting at the sun or frowning at your phone screen, remember that it's not just time that's etching its memoirs on your face.

Myth 2: Only Women Worry About Wrinkles

Ah, a classic case of stereotyping! While adverts might have us believe that only women partake in the nightly ritual of covering our faces in creams to fend off the wrinkle witch, men are just as keen to keep their skin looking younger.

The truth is, irrespective of gender, we all like to look our best and I certainly see, on a day to day basis, that to be the case.

Myth 3: Expensive Creams Can Erase Wrinkles Overnight

If only the solution to wrinkles was as simple as splurging on a cream that costs more than a weekend getaway. Despite the promises of adverts featuring models with skin as smooth as a Photoshop job, there's no magical potion for instant wrinkle removal. Effective skincare is more marathon than sprint – it's about consistency and care rather than breaking the bank in the hope of an overnight miracle.

Myth 4: Drinking Water Will Keep Wrinkles at Bay

Hydration is vital for a healthy body and for healthy skin too. And it’s fair to say that dehydration can accelerate your skin’s natural ageing process. But drinking water alone isn't going to prevent wrinkles. While staying hydrated contributes to overall skin health, preventing wrinkles is more about shielding your skin from the sun and not smoking. So, by all means, keep your water bottle handy, but don’t expect that alone to stop the wrinkles.

Myth 5: Only Sunbathers Need to Worry About Sun Damage

This is a big one! It’s a sunny day, but you're sitting inside, smugly thinking you've outsmarted the sun and its wrinkle-inducing rays. Think again. UVA rays, the ones responsible for ageing your skin, can sneak through windows and cloud cover like ninjas. Daily facial SPF isn’t just for those spending their days frolicking on the beach; it’s a must for everyone looking to keep their skin in top-notch condition.

Myth 6: You Can't Do Anything About Genetics

While it's true that genetics play a role in how your skin ages, it's not the whole story. Lifestyle choices have a significant impact on how quickly we develop wrinkles. Smoking, sunbathing, and frequent excessive alcohol consumption can accelerate the ageing process, regardless of your genetic disposition. So, while you can’t choose your family, you can choose to live a healthier lifestyle to keep your skin looking youthful.

Myth 7: Smile Less for Fewer Wrinkles

This might be the most joyless myth of them all. Yes, repeated facial expressions can contribute to fine lines and wrinkles, but should that stop you from smiling? Absolutely not. Smiling releases endorphins, making you feel happier and more positive. If choosing between a smooth, expressionless visage and a face full of happy memories and laughter lines, we know which we'd pick.

So What Can You Do To Keep Skin Looking Younger?

Sadly, we can’t freeze time. And ageing is a natural part of life. But for those of us keen to make sure our age isn’t etched into our skin, a healthy skincare routine is essential. And for those looking to keep wrinkles at bay regardless of age, anti wrinkle injections and other treatments provided by medically qualified practitioners can be a safe and effective way to do so.
